Rich, fertile, wet, but well drained soils in partial to complete shade are best for growing plants. Only when cultivated on consistently moist soils will it tolerate full sun. Somewhat tolerant of the deep South's extreme heat and humidity, and normally won't thrive in USDA Zone 8. Slow to get going, but then fairly active.
